Allen - Hi,

I’m a fairly new user to Photo Mechanic and Lightroom 3. What is your workflow in PM before importing to Lightroom? Do you move or copy your select images into a new folder for importing into LR? One of the reasons I’m using PM is to weed out the bad images and only import the good ones into LR, keeping the LR library lean.

Thanks,

Allen

Philip Thomas - Are you using a Mac or PC? I’m on a Mac. Either way, I star and label all my shots in PM before importing all images into LR. When I use LR, I always create a new library. Not only is this for cataloging reasons, but also to keep each shoot super fast to edit. LR will slow down as more and more images go into a catalog.
You can export images using PM instead of importing all images into LR but the purpose for me using PM is to view all photos very quickly. If you need screen shots how to set up a Mac to recognize PM in LR, please let me know and I’ll attach below.

Suzie - Hey Philip, thanks for posting this really helpful piece. I am new to Lightroom as I am totally sick of Aperture. When you export as TIFF is this as 8bit or 16bit? I love the idea of droplets but think I will still need to reopen my files for a final bit of dodging/burning. Want to make sure I keep as much information as possible when re-opening to re-edit. Having said that, there is only so much space on my hard drive!

Thanks so much,
Suzie

Philip Thomas - Hi Suzie,

Sorry for late reply. I’ve been out of town most of the week.

I do export as a TIFF in 16bit. I then reimport those exported files back into LR and tweak from there. I do not reopen the files as that would take a long time. As for extra space, I do not know your set-up, but you could always attach an external HD just for your edits.
